The Writing Center staff will give a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation to your class, either in your classroom or in the Writing Center (Cook Library 112), about the services we offer and how they can make an appointment to meet with a tutor.

The Writing Process Workshop

An introduction to the writing process for all disciplines. In this workshop, students will get the opportunity to review components of the writing process and provides strategies for getting ahead of procrastination.

Designing Effective Visual Tools

An overview of the role of visual communication. In this workshop, participants will learn about effective visual tools, such as visual rhetoric, universal design, and basic design principles.

Plagiarism and Citation

This workshop guides participants through the basics of plagiarism while providing information about how to incorporate and cite sources. Participants are also introduced to issues of AI in writing and provided resources to support them in the future.

Developing Your Paper: Introduction and Thesis

This workshop introduces participants to the basics of crafting an introduction and a thesis. It also shows students how to begin a paper by setting up a strong and clear argument.

Developing Your Paper: Paragraphs and Conclusion

This workshop introduces students to the importance of paragraphs and a conclusion in supporting a strong argument. In particular, this workshop discusses what goes into creating a good paragraph and how conclusions can help the paper end on a positive note.

Common Writing Mistakes and Getting Started on the Writing Process

This Workshop helps participants to address common writing mistakes that occur. Additionally, this workshop reviews how to get started on the writing process, with helpful tips to successfully write.

Add Writing Center to Your Syllabi

Encourage your students to visit the Writing Center by including the following statement on your syllabi:

The Writing Center is a friendly space that provides free, individualized feedback and support to help Southern Miss students succeed with writing assignments for any class. The Center offers one-to-one consultations for any stage of the writing process, from understanding the assignment and brainstorming ideas to revising and editing. To make an appointment, visit usm.edu/writing-center. Select “Schedule an Appointment” and create a WC Online account. The Writing Center is located in Cook Library 112, between Starbucks and the Speaking Center. For more information, visit usm.edu/writing-center or call the center at (601) 266-4821.

Turnitin

The Writing Center assistant director is the Turnitin.com administrator for the university. If you are an instructor and need access to the university's Turnitin.com account, please contact Eugene Gordon at 601.266.4644 or email eugene.gordonFREEMississippi. Turnitin access is also provided through integration with Canvas.

The Turnitin administrator is unable to provide access directly to students. Student access requires a course ID and join key which are generated by the instructor at the time the course is set up.
