There are many opportunities for Southern Miss undergraduate students to get involved in research, creative or other scholarly activities, find funding for these activities, or share their work on campus and beyond.
The Student Opportunity Center

The Council on Undergraduate Research
The (CUR) is a national organization that supports undergraduate student research collaborations with faculty mentors.
Join the , a database that helps match your interests with graduate programs that purchase access to the database, if you have research experience and are looking for graduate programs.
The CUR website also lists a variety of undergraduate student presentation and research opportunities, among them the (NCUR).
Nationally Competitive Programs at Southern Miss
- Staff in the Nationally Competitive Programs office advises and assists students with applications to a variety of nationally competitive scholarships, fellowships, grants, etc.
- Application deadlines vary with program.
The Southern Miss Center for Pathway Experiences
- The Center for Pathway Experiences promotes experiences for Southern Miss undergraduate students related to their post-graduation career goals.
- Log in to the application with your 91°µÍøºÚÁÏ email and SOAR password to explore professional development opportunities (internships, research experiences, etc.).
The McNair Scholars Program
- The McNair Scholars Program provides scholarships to graduate school-bound students from underrepresented backgrounds.
- McNair Scholars engage in mentored research and participate in valuable professional development activities.
- The application deadline is in early October.
Mississippi INBRE Scholars Program
- offers paid summer programs for students interested in biomedical research, service or outreach at one of the Mississippi partner universities.
- Students must be Mississippi residents and U.S. citizens.
- The application deadline is March 1 (5 p.m.).
Dale Center for the Study of War & Society
- The Dale Center for the Study of War & Society Awards at least one student grant of up to $1,000 for research or creative activity that addresses historical and contemporary wars.
- The funds may be used for expenses related to research, creative or other professional development activity, including travel to present the scholarly work at a conference, performance venue, etc.
Army ROTC
The Army ROTC program Provides to eligible college students who intend to join and serve for at least four years in the U.S. Army, Army National Guard or Army National Reserve after graduation.
Students must be U.S. citizens and meet certain physical standards.
