Multicultural Student Initiatives

We seek to foster a culture of belonging through Multicultural Student Initiatives. Student access, success, and retention are at the heart of what we do. We seek to provide opportunities to promote cultural competency through intentional programs and events.

Student Organization Support 

These student organizations are affiliated with the Office of Community and Belonging.

Afro-American Student Organization (AASO)

The Afro-American Student Organization (AASO) promotes academic, social, and cultural wellness for all students. We provide academic, social, and cultural activities for students. We promote scholastic excellence and engage in group discussions on topics of mutual interest to increase belonging within the University and in the greater community.

Men of Excellence (MOX)


Men of Excellence (MOX) is a community service based organization seeking to develop better men at Southern Miss. We facilitate educationally enriching programs that build a foundation of excellence in our members. We serve the campus and greater community with pride, maintain respect for ourselves and others, and excel in all endeavors.

Women's Empowerment Association (WEA)

The Women's Empowerment Association (WEA) seeks to uplift, empower and inspire all women.

NAACP

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) seeks to improve the political, educational, social and economic status of minority groups; to eliminate racial discrimination; and to take all lawful action to secure its elimination, consistent with the efforts of the national organization and in conformity with the Articles of Incorporation of the Association, its Constitution and By-Laws and as directed by the National Board of Directors.

Sexuality and Gender Equity (SAGE)

Sexuality and Gender Equity (SAGE) facilitates safe spaces for queer people at Southern Miss and seeks to educate the campus community through educational events and conversations on queer topics. By promoting knowledge and safety, we hope to create long-term change and a body of activists for queer progress. We hope to make Southern Miss a campus where all people feel that they have a place to be authentically themselves.

African Caribbean Society (ACS)

The African Caribbean Society (ACS) celebrates the deep connection of people from African and Caribbean descent. ACS is a group of students who come together to encourage, embrace, and appreciate our heritage. We welcome people from all cultures and ethnicities to join to learn about African and Caribbean culture.

 

The Kennard Scholars Program

Kennard Scholars Program

This Kennard Scholars Program helps eligible students fund their education and gain skills to help the be successful in college. The scholarship program is named for Clyde Kennard, a civil rights pioneer who led the way in desegregation in Mississippi higher education.

Celebration of Scholastic Excellence (COSE) 

This Celebration of Scholastic Excellence (COSE) awards is a partnership with the Afro-American Student Organization (AASO) to recognize the accomplishments of African American student leaders. We pay tribute to trailblazers who have paved the way for historically underserved students in higher education.

MOX Men's Summit

The Men of Excellence (MOX) Men's Summit aims to support male student development and retention at Southern Miss.  

Kente Graduation Ceremony 

Kente Graduation Ceremony

The Kente Graduation Ceremony celebrates the educational achievements of students who are a part of the African diaspora population. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the heritage and accomplishments of graduating students as they transition into the professional world. Participating students receive a hand-woven Kente stole from Ghana, Africa. The Kente stole dates back to 12th century Africa and the Ashanti people. The cloth was traditionally worn by kings, queens, and influential figures in Ghana’s society during ceremonial occasions. The Kente Ceremony is traditionally held in the spring semester and is open to students graduating in the fall or spring semesters of that year.
