process, funds, or monitoring of these third-party sites. Please, use your best judgment
and our office's best practice tips listed below to help identify potential fraud
offers.
Applying for Additional Scholarships:
- Research the organization: Search the Better Business Bureau for complaints and reviews, call and talk to a customer service representative (ask questions about the company history/results), ask them to mail you an information packet if possible.
- Verify the process: Reach out to the company or organization beforehand to obtain information on the application process, timelines, disbursement methods, how to file a complaint, customer service policies, and all other pertinent information for follow up and resolving issues to verify legitimacy.
- Do not give out sensitive information: This could be items such as social security numbers, bank information, or information otherwise not typically asked for a scholarship offer.
- Do not click on suspicious emails: Hackers can make their fraud sites look legitimate, even by using a real company’s name in the URL. Instead, go to the company's website by typing the URL directly into your browser. If you're still in doubt, phone the company.
- Do not fill out forms in email messages asking you for personal or financial information: Only communicate these pieces of information with a company you're working with over the phone or on a secure website.
- Make sure you are on a secure Web page when entering sensitive information: Secure Web pages will have https: (note the "s") at the beginning of their Web address instead of just http: If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may also see a security lock image in the bottom right of the browser window.
